NewCEN has been 'resting'. As many of you know, newCEN was a group set up by Lifestile. NewCEN still is being developed. It has not gone away. However, lifestile has been working on its other projects such as itsthemedia, povertyscape and even three-c.

More details of our plans will be published on this site soon.

Councillors and the community.. PDF Print E-mail

There is an increasing agenda from national government to turn political councillors into community leaders. However, there is a fundamental problem with this logic, a definitive conflict of interest between the   councillor and the community.  Obvious examples include recent events in Northumberland, the mass closure of schools. Can councillors be considered community leaders, when the community wants to keep the school open, but the politicians do not ? This is not necessarily a criticism of councillors, but they are what they are, political representatives.

However, we know how important local government and councillors are to the community. That does not mean that councillors should lead the community, or the community sector.  If the government states councillors should be leaders, and hand over assets to the community, then that would mean that the government would be handing over their decisions to the local community leaders....

That in-turn means local government would be handing control of the community to the Local authority councillors... all change there then !!!!!!!

NewCEN is not against councillors, or there work, so in good faith, NewCEN will publish a number of links for councillors. We are putting the links for two reasons. One is for councillors, the other is for the community.. There are a number of government links about councillors and local government on NewCENs website. Go to our links page for them !

The history of NCEN dates back to 2001, and after March 31st, becomes the former Community Voice support project that worked to get community representatives on the various LSP themes in Newcastle. Even though Newcen has lost much of this role to NCVS the voluntary sector partner, Newcen will continue its work with a number of existing organisations and new partners. It will be 'business as usual', and will develop and (hopefully continue its represention with housing, economy, etc but it a different form

Newcen, however there will be changes, and 'as ever', no matter what group you come from, you as a CV must have the community and Newcen in mind.
